Abstract

A 47-year-old woman displayed rapidly worsening cerebellar degeneration, bulbar encephalitis, and peripheral neuropathy four years after radical mastectomy and a course of systemic chemotherapy for breast cancer. Progressive neurologic deterioration over a period of one year ended with her death from intercurrent infection. Postmortem examination failed to reveal any recurrent neoplasm, but neuropathologic study revealed cerebellar degeneration and bulbar encephalitis consistent with paraneoplastic disease.
